MindMeister: Mind mapping goes online
I’ve become a big fan of mind mapping for organizing my thoughts when writing or creating presentations. Whether on paper, or on a computer, I find that mind mapping really helps me organize my thoughts, and group related concepts. I typically use paper, or FreeMind. Each has its advantages. In paper’s case, it’s portability. In [...] [23 Feb 2007]
Google Spreadsheets
Red Herring magazine has an article called 17 MS Office Killers that covers web office applications. Fresh from the Google Labs, we’ve got Google Spreadsheets. Google Spreadsheets has been in testing through an invitation-only beta since June. But it appears that they’re starting to roll it out for the rest of us. You can click [...] [13 Aug 2006]
Performancing extension for Firefox
UPDATE: Performancing for Firefox has been acquired by PayPerPost.com and is now known as Scribefire While reading and writing about Flock, I kept seeing mentions of a extension for Firefox that would handle blog publishing better than Flock does: the Performancing extension. I installed it, and WHOA. This extension kicks some serious blogging-through-the-browser a**. Below [...] [5 Jul 2006]
One-link Wednesday: TagFetch.com
TagFetch: A tag search engine that finds and gathers tagged content. Sign up, and you can save your searches. TagFetch pulls photos, video and blog posts from a range of sources, including Flickr, YouTube, Newsvine, and Technorati. I haven’t used it extensively (in fact, I did exactly one search), but it seems like it might [...] [14 Jun 2006]
Open source favorites
I should mention that — except where noted — all of these packages are either web-based, or cross-platform. I use quite a few open source applications in my day-to-day tinkering and freelance gigging. What open-source apps do you use regularly (or not-so-regularly)? Firefox My vote for Greatest Browser Ever. WordPress Kick-ass blog publishing software. Also [...] [30 May 2006]
What’s your favorite text editor or IDE?
When I first started doing freelance coding, I used a ‘borrowed’ version of HomeSite. Eventually my conscience got the better of me (plus HomeSite’s publisher was acquired by Macromedia and HomeSite was dumped), and I went searching for a free editor to replace HomeSite (since I was broke and all). First I tried 1st Page, [...] [17 May 2006]
Structured blogging
I mentioned this briefly in the Atlanta PHP May meeting post. Structured blogging is an intiative to provide a standard format for blogging about particular forms of content. The idea is to make it easier to share particular bits of microcontent by publishing it in a consistent form. The Structured Blogging team has developed plugins [...] [1 May 2006]

Today’s bit o’ fun: Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music
It’s a little bit gawdy, but it’s an awfully handy reference for all the variants of electronic music. [16 Mar 2004]
