Personalization versus the zeitgeist: thoughts on Google’s search quality
Anil’s round-up of three recent posts bashing Google’s search results sparked this entry. I present below two screen shots of a recent search I did for the keyword “lichtenstein.” My results while logged-in. My results after logging out and re-submitting the query. The top image features my personalized search results for “lichtenstein” when logged in [...] [7 Jan 2011]
Personalized search is now Google’s default
With little fanfare, Google made its personalized search system the default this week. Whereas searchers had the option of turning on this feature before, now users’ search histories are automatically factored into the engine’s mysterious algorithm. This means that results users actually click on after a particular search will be ranked higher in subsequent searches [...] [11 Dec 2009]

A9.com
A while back, I mentioned Amazon’s new search engine, A9.com. It’s still in beta, but this just might become my new favorite engine. A9 is powered by Google, which is pretty darn good as far as search engines go. But A9 adds a few enhancements. For example: Search history: Your personalized search homepage features links [...] [29 May 2004]
The title attribute and search result links
While searching the SURL site, I noticed that many of the page titles were cut off. I won’t go in to what makes a good page title, or why page titles are important. But perhaps Google should add the title attribute — featuring the complete page title — to each link. When a user moused-over, [...] [27 May 2004]

Amazon launches search
Via News.com: Amazon’s A9.com search service went live today (in Beta). And it’s tied to your Amazon account, which allows you to save, review and manage your searches. I’ll leave it to you to consider the privacy concerns. When you search, not only do you get web results, but you also get book results — [...] [14 Apr 2004]
