Does your blog have (or need) a content strategy?

Here’s the secret: you don’t have to obsess about your content strategy, especially when posting regularly becomes a habit. You just have to do what feels natural to you. But taking time to prepare your objectives, intentions, schedule and scope allows you to clearly set out and remember what is natural for you, before you get sidetracked with what other people are telling you to do with your blog.

My first reaction is to ask “What do you mean by the phrase ‘professional blog’?” Plenty of web professionals blog, and blog about a range of topics and ideas. Molly blogs about web standards, travel, and occasionally posts a poem. Anil Dash posts about everything from tech to hip-hop. PSFK is all about spotting trends and generating ideas. My own blog started as a blog about web development, and well, have you looked at my recent posts lately?

Plenty of professional bloggers also blog erratically. Blogging frequency matters if your ad dollars depend on page views. Readers understand that we all have lives and careers to manage. Besides quality is more important than quality when it comes to building mind-share and audience.

As “thought leadership,” “fresh insights,” “trend spotting,” and strategy become why people and agencies get hired or fired, I think a professional blog’s content strategy can be as simple as “Today, I think this is interesting. Here’s why.”
