8 Tracks from Africa

This is what happens when the light from my laptop resets my circadian rhythms: I stay up until nearly 2 a.m. creating a mix over at 8tracks.com. 8 songs. 8 artists. 6 countries.

Tracks may not be presented in the order I intended. 8 Tracks’ licensing agreement means that they have to shuffle tracks after the first play. Most of these were pulled from ‘greatest hits’ or compilation albums by the artist. Track list is as follows:

  1. “Ah Ndiya” by Oumou Sangaré from Oumou (Mali)
  2. “Choro” by Lura from M’bem Di Fora (Cape Verde)
  3. “Safina Oulla Chatwa” by Nass El Ghiwane from La Legende (Morocco)
  4. “Synchro System (Complete Original Version)” by King Sunny Ade The Best of the Classic Years (Nigeria)
  5. “Water No Get Enemy” by Fela Kuti The Best Best of Fela Kuti (Nigeria)
  6. “African Dialects” by Peter King Nigeria 70 – Lagos Jump (Nigeria)
  7. “Safi (Pure)” by Rachid Taha from Tékitoi (Algeria)
  8. “Paradiso” by Konono No 1 from Congotronics (Democratic Republic of Congo [formerly Zaire])
