Racially, yes Akin. Culturally? No. Her family is part of the Indian community in Guyana, which dates back a couple of centuries. It's very much a fusion culture, shaped by British colonialism and the African-descended population of Guyana. She's a practicing Christian, as is much of her family. They'll sometimes go to Guyanese clubs or listen to soca at family gatherings. They live in a mostly-Caribbean neighborhood (though now it's shifting to an El Salvadoran-Dominican one). Indian? Not so much.

I can't comment on your situation, but for your friend she would be Indian. For the most part, there are clear historical records of which Indians were shipped over and it is possible to trace back one's ancestry.

LOVE this post!! It really resonated with me because I struggled with the same thing when I was abroad. Its really weird to see how ethnicity, nationality, race and "background" overlap and come apart from each other at home and abroad. Again, GREAT post!!!!

This is a really great post!

I read something recently (too lazy to find it and actually link to it) that was talking about how "whiteness" and "blackness" actually don't have much to do w/ skin color but are concepts. It went into the history of some ethnic groups in the US, like how Italians weren't considered "white" 100+ years ago but now they are. Really interesting stuff.

love the "define black" section of this. As the world becomes more global, these are the kinds of things I think about more and more often.
