I don't know what the Democratic establishment would think, but they've pretty much taken a back seat in this thing anyway.

I think it could go over very well as Obama could use some Libertarian reinforcements. One of the big right-wing arguments against Obama has to do with taxes, having a Fair Tax advocate covering his flank would be invaluable as long as it was a credible threat i.e. Obama has to be truly open to that as an alternative and integrate it enough into his platform so that it doesn't come off as a hackjob of a pander.

Heck, Libertarians and the right love the Fair Tax so much that I think they just might let Universal Health Care and a black President slip in to give it a shop. If Obama/Gravel could exploit synergies on this, its impact can't be underestimated.

The big issue I see is that Gravel is so much older with so much more experience that the contrast might not look so great. If they played it right though, I think that it would be an awesome ticket. But I say that being a "soft" Libertarian myself.

@Rashid: you know, I might have to co-sign you on that one. It gives Obama the experienced hand he needs. From what I've seen / heard of him in interviews, he's a total firebrand without being crazy -- a straight talker for real. I think he's a little to the left of Obama though, and his tax stance could be a problem.

The other issue is that he's sort of left the Democratic party. On March 26, he decided to run as a Libertarian. I'm not sure how well him coming back to the party would go over.

Gravel is my Obama VP pick. He gave Clinton and Obama hell during the debates and would do the same to whoever the Republicans put up as VP.

He is a "soft" libertarian at best (like "hard" and "soft" atheists) but there is a lot of upside.
