a mish-mosh of stuff

Quoted from the piece:

I just write and talk about sex. But every woman on the Internet gets called slutty and ugly and fat (to put it lightly) no matter what; all we have to be is female. In dinner conversation, my friend Lori reminded me of the Oscar Wilde quote, “Give a man a mask, and he’ll tell you the truth.” I restated it for the Internet, replying, “Give a man a mask, and he’ll slit your throat.” The application here is, “Give a man (or a woman) an anonymous account, and he’ll eviscerate your self-esteem.”

Sad but true: if you’re a woman who blogs about politics or culture, at some point someone will make a disagreement with you into a problem with your looks, relationship status, and/or sexual orientation. Men can just be stupid. Women are invariably stupid, ugly, man-less bitches. Whether straight or gay, we’re always ‘lesbos’ who should be hate-fucked.* And yeah, the critic is ALMOST ALWAYS male — <hypocrite>and probably one who is at least as unattractive and offensive as he accuses us of being, but I digress.</hypocrite>

*Yes, there were two incidents in the last couple of years directed at women that used those exact words.

  • Jennifer
Preach. Sad but I have seen it. I appreciate you pointing it out.
  • There was a political blogger in the UK who used to object to comments by a female journalist, but did so using the most disgusting, hateful, and sexist comments I have ever read. The shame of it is that he got a lot of traffic as a result.

Needless to say I never subscribed.
  • I'm not worried. Just commenting on a disheartening phenomenon.
  • Don't worry too much - such men are just a stupid and abrasive when they talk to other guys as they are talking to women. It's almost always not a gender thing, but a social thing.

Take a look on Digg or YouTube any other 'social' site. You don't need to be a girl to get abusive vapid rubbish spouted at you by some moron hidden behind a computer connection. Why do they usually pick looks or sex when they know it's a girl on the receiving end? Because it's assumed that a girl gives a damn about that and so it's the best way to ruffle feathers. Likewise if it's a guy on the receiving end usually their sexuality is questioned. Meh. If these are the best insults they can think to try, they're boring as well as dysfunctional.
