My essential mobile applications
Most of these applications will work with any Java-capable smart phone. Platform-specific applications are noted.
- GCalSync
- Synchronize your mobile phone’s calendar with your Google calendar. Open source.
- Google Maps for Mobile
- It was already a cool application for GPS-less people. But Google’s new My Location feature is The Awesome. It uses cell tower triangulation to guess your location, reducing, if not eliminating the need to enter a ‘from’ address.
- Gmail Mobile
- Okay, I live way too much of my life using services from ‘teh Goog,’ but Gmail mobile is effin‘ awesome if you already have a Google account.
- Gizmo for Mobile
- Have a Nokia wifi-enabled S60 phone? Save your cell minutes and make cheap VoIP calls with Gizmo project.
- F-Secure Mobile AntiVirus
- Your smart-a** phone is awfully dumb when it comes to code. If you plan on running a lot of applications on your phone, you may want to look this an anti-virus package ($34.95 per year). There’s also a version with a firewall.
- Flash Lite 2.1
- Run all kinds of groovy applications on your mobile.
- Handy Zip for Nokia N80
- Open and extract ZIP files sent via Bluetooth, download or e-mail. You can also create ZIP archives on your phone ($12.95).
