Widgets and Gadgets and Modules! Oh my!

Personal homepage service Netvibes has released Ecosystem, a directory of cross-platform widgets for iGoogle, Apple’s Dashboard, Windows Vista, and Opera. CNet has the story: Netvibes widgets now available on Google, Vista, Mac

Okay, no one is using “doo-dads” to refer to these JavaScript-DOM-CSS and Flash-based thingamabobs for your web page or desktop, but I needed a third term :-).At least one company uses the term ‘modules’ It’s an all-widgets and gadgets round up.

The Ever-Changing Widget Landscape
A surprisingly fair (considering it’s Yahoo! writing about itself and its competitors) piece about the world of widgets. (Added January 30, 2007)
The Year of the Widget?
With the release of Vista, will 2007 be the Year of the Widget? (Added February 8, 2007)
Can Widgets Fix the Mobile Web?
Forget the desktop. Widgets may be the way to get bite-sized, contextual information to mobile phones.

Widgets — web-based ones, at least — go mainstream. (Added January 18, 2007)
Widgipedia
Web widgets, desktop widgets, and developer resources for creating widgets. (Added January 17, 2007)
Widgets 1.0
A working draft from the World Wide Web Consortium about developing widgets. (Added November 13, 2006)
LabPixies
Web based widgets / gadgets. LabPixies is a development firm that will develop customized widgets for your company. They also build their own. (Added November 13, 2006)

A widget engine for Firefox (which I’m not crazy about because it doesn’t integrate well with your operating system interface). (Added November 7, 2006)
Live Spaces: The challenges facing gadget developers
Things to consider when developing Microsoft Live Spaces gadgets. (Added November 6, 2006)
Widsets
Your web site in a mobile widget (Added November 6, 2006).
Microsoft Gadgets
Use JavaScript/JScript, CSS, XML and DOM-scripting to create widgets / gadgets for Windows Live pages and the forthcoming Vista desktop. By the way, the Microsoft SDK isn’t really an SDK. All you need is a web server and a good text editor. (Added November 6, 2006)
SpringWidgets
An engine that enables Flash-based widgets on the desktop (and the web). From Fox Interactive. The SDK is Windows-only, which is kind of dumb considering many, if not most Flash designers / developers are Mac users. (Added November 6, 2006)
Attributes, Not Elements
Look for the next version of the Yahoo! Widget XML to use attributes over elements.
DashboardWidgets.com
A community for designers, developers and users of Mac OS X widgets.
Developers at Widgetbox
Make hosted widgets that bloggers can include on their pages.
Yahoo! Widgets Workshop
Documentation and directions for creating Yahoo! Widgets
Opera Widgets
Tips, tutorials, style guides, and JavaScript libraries for developing Opera browser widgets.
Developing Dashboard Widgets
Apple’s own documentation.
Google Gadgets
‘A widget by any other name…’ Create goodies that run on several Google products, or darn near any web page.

  1. Heh, you must have caught the Om and Niall PodSessions talk.
If you have not already done so, check it here..

  2. Actually, no I hadn’t. Thanks for the link. I’m actually learning all about widgets for my job, since we’d like to be able to sell them to clients.

I did catch some of the Widgets Live posts on GigaOM though.

  3. heh … i just noticed the title of that podcast is also “Widgets and gadgets and modules…Oh my!” d’oh! the title-jacking was totally unintentional.
