Live redesign in stages: Reorganizing content
One of my reasons for a new design is to allow for better organization of content, and the addition of new bits.
I want to add a couple of features: a topic / category listing (perhaps a tag cloud) and a link blog. I also want to flatten information architecture a bit, so that it’s easier to find everything from the homepage (not that there’s scads of content here, but you get what I mean). For example, I want to feature slides from presentations more prominently.
One of my biggest internal debates is whether or not to have a separate contact form page, or integrate it into the homepage. Because I will only have one post on the homepage, I’m sure a few folks will mistake the contact form for a comment form. Still the idea of having (almost) everything on one page appeals to me.
I also want to kill a few of my less-popular and dated articles. They don’t generate much traffic, and they’re rather old. I won’t delete them entirely, but I will make them far less prominent.
The biggest hurdle will likely be integrating the articles that I intend to keep into WordPress. It’s nothing some quick-n-dirty scripting can’t address, but it’s more certainly more involved than slinging some CSS.
Once I create my content plan, I’ll get cracking on the site’s overall design, beginning with the color scheme and the individual post pages.
Stay tuned.
