What’s your travel style?

Sweetie and I got into a IM-gument yesterday about travel. We’ve been discussing a January getaway to some place that requires a passport. Our bones of contention: where to go, how to get there, and where to stay.

I guess it comes down to travel styles. I’m more of an explorer type of person. I don’t mind roughing it for the sake of having a good story to tell. Less than stellar hotel? No problem. Snakes? Lizards? They don’t bother me.* Spiders? Bugs? No fear!**

My idea of a great getaway is going to a place near the ocean with some sights to see. I prefer getting around on foot or mass transit. I want to find that little raggedy joint with the best mole/calamari/pupusas/foo-foo in town. I want to see some ruins, check out a museum, go for a hike, compare cultural notes with the locals, and just generally get a feel for the place.

Sweetie, on the other hand? He’s content with an all-inclusive resort or cruise. Everything in one bundle, with no worries. Location? Doesn’t matter. He just wants to get away. His travel style places a premium on taking it easy.

What’s your travel style? Are you more of a cruise or resort type? Or do you like to roam?

* As long as they’re not big, not venomous, and pay their share of the hotel room.
** I’m lying. I don’t like bugs. Big ones give me the willies. If one appears in my hotel room, it can have the room.

I don’t mind a less than stellar hotel, but it’s got to be worth as much as I paid for. Hotels don’t usually have bugs/spiders anyway, they’re given light turns daily.

I’ve only been nauseous one night on a cruise. Despite the occasional severe rocking (and sometimes the lack of entertainment), I’d go again. Roaming usually costs more because it takes longer.

How timely. Loverboy and I just spent the last week pontificating, negotiating, sighing, and getting on each other’s nerves to decide on a quick getaway. We have different travel styles.

I think I’m somewhere in the middle. I like to see how other’s live but I don’t want to be terribly inconvenienced.

A clean room with a comfortable bed and a prviate bath are my requirements (I refuse to share a bath). Other than that, I don’t generally plan on lounging in the room.

Like to do it both ways. generally speaking give me a few days of pampering and a few days to either get lost or go off the beaten trail. One without the other is doable but both is the best kind of vacation.

Just getting back from Quebec, so your question is very timely. I don’t care much for hotel ambiance. In fact, I stayed in a Holiday Inn, and though it was outdated, it scored some cool points with Wi-Fi and breakfast. Bare essentials in my book. I’d prefer to spend my loot on comfortable transport and good food. The reality is you really only spend 20-30% of your time in the hotel. Oh yeah, the bed should be comfortable too ;)
