Recently completed: Georgia Tech School of Economics

After several months of development, we launched a brand new web site for Georgia Tech’s School of Economics.

I designed the site using Photoshop and Fireworks (I find it easier to design in Fireworks, but Photoshop is better with image manipulation). I built it with BBEdit, using XHTML 1.0 (Transitional) and CSS, which is the Institute standard.

Most of the back-end is static, although I did use PHP and MySQL to develop a job and internship management database and search interface. Job listings are also available as an RSS feed.

For fun, I created a CSS-driven demo of sorts. It’s a screen shot of the web site, with “notes” about some of the home page’s fancier features. It doesn’t work in Internet Explorer (I will write some JavaScript so that it will), so you will need to view it using Firefox, Safari or Opera.

Discussion: MySpace and Deleting Online Predators Act (DOPA)
From the interview: The media often reference a Crimes Against Children report that states one in five children receive a sexual solicitation online. A careful reading of this report shows that 76% of the unwanted solicitations came from fellow children. This includes unwanted date requests and sexual taunts from fellow teens. Of the adult solicitations, 96% are from people 18-25; wanted and unwanted solicitations are both included.

Good work on the website. I’m in the midst of redesining two of my schools’s dept. sites. I really like the pattern on the background and I love how the header photos change whenever you jump to a new page. Question: Do you write a script to change the photos every time a users navigates to a new page or do you just make static photos for each particular page?

Those are static photos on each page. Static backgrounds, actually. They’re another cue that lets the user know which section of the site they’re viewing.

    - The GaTech site looks good. You say that the backend is static but are you using any type of CMS? Are your breadcrumbs just static parts of each page?

Ahh how Suckerfish dropdowns rocked my world.

    - IE doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t handle it according to the spec.

So what are you going to tell us next? There are no turtles all the way down?

Yep: It’s all static. Even the breadcrumbs.

Because Econ doesn’t change their pages often, and doesn’t update their information more than once a year, a CMS would have been overkill.

The news and events portions are database-driven, but that’s about it.

I dig. I only ask because here @ Georgia State we have no choice but to use a CMS. It’s a new policy that everybody hasn’t been hit by yet, but it’s the elephant in the room of every redesign / launch.

Just wondered if GT was going through anything similar.

Tiffany, I’m curious why you use Fireworks instead of ImageReady since you use Photoshop?

I use Fireworks because I find its vector-based drawing tools easier to work with. Its slicing tools are just as easy. I just flow better in it.
