SXSW: Saturday on C.P.T.

Saturday evening was the “Public Square or Private Club” panel with Melinda, Lisa and Barb. Panel went swimmingly well. Pretty much my entire blog fam was there to listen and participate. Post-panel the Black Student Union (as JT calls us) went to Ironworks for some barbecue. We spotted Lisa Ling on her way to the restroom.

After Ironworks, half of the BSU went back to their hotels and the other half went to the frog design bash, followed by the Laptop Battle by AMODA at Copa. That was dope … until the faux hip-hop from France intermission. She had bad lyrics that were poorly delivered, although the DJ was amazing. As for the battle artists I was rooting for Matthewmatics to win the whole thing (he won his first-round matchup) but time ran out. AMODA didn’t get through the final two rounds.

AMODA was followed by a walk down 6th Street on a mission to find Koriente. Instead we found the Bad Ass Fajitas truck and what I suspect was Austin’s only hip-hop night (I think it was Bayou). And yes, the fajitas were indeed bad ass — and spicy enough to make you feel sober. (Um, not that I was drinking or anything…)

And yeah, I know this post has gone up on Monday, but Internet access from my hotel (Capitol Place) has been absolutely sh*tty.

I’ve got to say one thing though: there are enough black people here that if we wanted to have a Negro Happy Hour, we could. Hugh Forrest and the rest of the SXSW folks have done such an amazing job of getting black folks here. Now we need to work on getting different kinds of brown — Asian-Americans, Latino/as, and Native Americans.

Another thing: crazy mad phat-booty props to BlogHer and SXSW for teaming up. Last year was dope and estrogen was nicely represented. But this year? OMFinG: I swear every other attendee was born with a Y chromosome. To see women flocking to SXSW en masse — and black women were there too — is so incredibly beautiful.
